How does a business go from nowhere to top Google listings with a small outlay and a little home grown effort, helped by Cyan Shiner? Here's how.
We started our photography business eight years ago with hope, our skills and a simple website designed by a friend consisting of a single page, a few photographs and our contact details.
To our surprise, we attracted business and started slowly to grow. It took time to cover our start up costs and develop our product. We knew little of sales and marketing, and to be honest, most of our hard earned profits quickly disappeared in the print advertising we needed to attract clients.
Friends who were more established in the business suggested we consulted with Cyan Shiner to work on our brand and improve our website. It was the best business decision we ever made.
They visited our studio and worked patiently with us to focus on how best to present ourselves to a discerning clientele. Taking care of our business stationery and marketing materials and ensured that the 'look' of our website matched what we are about. They advised on the content and style of advertisements we still were placing in national magazines. We moved up to the next level of business.

Cyan Shiner wrote and gave us a helpful booklet on White Hat wizardry which meant we were able to identify key search terms which gave prominence to our website. We now regularly come top or near the top in the search engines for clients looking for our type of service.
These are difficult times for most businesses. Clients are increasingly demanding and competitors are after our place in the market. It's no time to be complacent. A hard working, attractive website is essential to our survival and growth and thanks to the Google Analytics Cyan Shiner added to our website's coding we can track all visitors to our site and evaluate what they are looking for. We can do all this in the time we have available and at no extra cost.
Our business is now completely turned around. We spend very little on print advertising these days and don't need to spend a great deal of time on working our website, our main shop window. We attract an international clientele, with bookings ranging from couples in Toyko to Atlanta, Georgia. We offer links on our website to other suppliers we can genuinely recommend and this brings us valuable word of mouth business.

Having spent a significant amount of time over the last week or two using Passport 2 application, I wanted to say a huge “thank you” for making it the incredibly impressive and efficient system that it now is. I have used it to:
- write and edit questions
- build and edit tests
- allocate tests
- review results
- manage participant logins
- monitor progress of an individual
- manage the security of a client site (Credit Suisse Securities Bootcamp that will take place here in Hong Kong in November)
and I have to say that all of these tasks have been made much easier in Passport 2.
Thank you too for making Passport and our Client websites work as one in terms of appearance and security, the management of which is now incredibly straightforward and far quicker than the approach we were forced to take before.
We have already used the new Passport system extensively with ING for both pre and post-course testing on the Skills Uptiering Programme. Participants from all over the region have taken part in this with no technical difficulties reported at all. And the Credit Suisse Securities Bootcamp will be attended by 40 participants of which 30 will be CS’s clients, so both Passport and the Client website will be seen and used by 10+ different institutions from around Asia.
